The Compeer Program matches adults who are living with mental illness with community volunteers to create intentional friendships with the goal of reducing isolation and loneliness.

You will meet with your friend on a regular basis at mutually convenient times to share activities you both enjoy, such as movies, sports, going for walks in good weather, shopping or coffee and a chat, or many of the free activities available in the Iowa City/Johnson County area.

You and your new friend will spend about an hour together once a week (or 2 hours every two weeks). Training, ongoing education, and support are provided by the Compeer staff.

Compeer volunteers are rewarded by the knowledge that they are making a positive difference in someone’s life! Both people gain a new friend with whom to enjoy and explore different aspects of life, learn from, and grow with.

Provide occasional transportation for Compeer participants to and from social engagement events in your personal vehicle. 

Participants in need of transportation are located in Johnson County, mostly Iowa City. Transportation is usually needed once or twice a month. 

Help people within your community gain access to social engagement events that foster mental wellbeing through meaningful connections. 

Join the friendly front-of-shop team at Crowded Closet! Retail volunteers create a welcoming shopping experience by greeting customers, assisting at checkout, organizing displays, and helping keep the sales floor tidy and inviting. Whether you enjoy connecting with people or keeping things running smoothly behind the counter, your time supports local and global relief, development, and peace projects through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

Skilled, experienced individuals responsible for performing phlebotomy blood draws, dipstick urinalysis, and other CLIA waved lab tests. Must already know how to draw blood. Transportation is required as the lab volunteer will deliver specimens to an outside lab for processing after clinic.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food assistance to anyone in Coralville who needs it. Volunteers guiding members through the pantry, checking members in. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for two pantry shifts a month, but no minimum or maximum is required.

Calling all cooks!   Our Casserole Club is a fun opportunity to support the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House by preparing casseroles to freeze and serve at a later date.  Groups are responsible for buying groceries for the casserole of their choosing, preparing the casserole, and cleaning up after the cooking.    Feel free to share a special family recipe or create something new!

We generally ask that you make enough for 65 people.  (3-4 9" x 11" pans is usually about right).   We'll provide all utensils, pots & pans, and the aluminum pans with lids for freezing.

Many families and individuals in our community struggle daily to secure enough food to eat and they often have to overcome additional barriers such as transportation and housing. The Coralville Community Food Pantry (CCFP) works to address this issue by offering weekly food deliveries to anyone in Coralville or Tiffin who needs it. Volunteer drivers will pick up pre-packaged groceries, up to 5 per route and deliver them around Coralville and Tiffin for a no-contact, front door delivery.  Routes take no longer than an hour to complete.  Deliveries can be done at any moment in time between Tuesday and Saturday from 9:30 - 7 PM.

The office assistant will support office personal through administrative and clerical functions.  An office assistant may help by answering phones, filing, making copies, data entry, making admission packets and helping with mailings.

Our Vigil volunteers are dedicated individuals who provide emotional support and companionship to patients and their families in their final days of life.  They sit bedside, offering comfort through conversation, prayer, music or simply just being present.

Our compassion visits can be anything from holding a patient's hand, reading to the patient, talking with the patient to watching TV, listening to music and playing games.

Help us pack orders of local produce for our online market. Volunteers will pack bags for distribution on Thursdays. This opportunity requires close toed shoes and a lot of moving. An enjoyable and easy way to get to know others in the community who are interested in learning about local food systems!

Food safety training is required before being eligible for a volunteer shift. Please get in touch with Field to Family to arrange for the training. Training takes about 30 minutes and can be held before your first shift.

We are looking for servers (just like at a restaurant) to help us take orders and offer a true dining experience to our guests who are experiencing homelessness and food insecurity!

We are currently looking for a few new servers to help us out over the summer. This can be an every week or every other week opportunity.

This is a great way to learn more about homelessness and hunger in our community and to meet people you may not get to meet otherwise!

The Tuesday afternoon shift involves helping carry groceries up the stairs (very glamorous but only takes five minutes as a team effort), prepping any food necessary for the special, setting up the dining hall, and assisting with other kitchen tasks to help us get ready for our Wednesday morning service. This job is easy-going and social!

After the café stops serving in the morning, we need help doing dishes! If you'd like to support the Cafe, but don't like getting up too early - this job is for you! Come and have breakfast and then help wash up. An hour is all that is required. What works for you, works for the Cafe: 8-9am; 8:30-9:30am; 8-10am etc.

This job is a really easy way to give back, requires little social interaction (if you don't want), and can happen every week or every other week!

Farm season is busy, help us keep are small equipment running and in good condition. Oil changes, carb issues, gas lines in tillers, trimmers, and small walk-behind tractors.

Our families look forward to a home cooked meal after a long day at the hospital.  We welcome individuals and groups who wish to prepare a dinner meal for our families at any of our three locations:  Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City; Family Room at St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids; and Family Room at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.

Groups are responsible for planning, providing the groceries, cooking/preparing, and cleaning up. Meals must be prepared onsite at the Ronald McDonald House or come from a commercial kitchen.

If you’re looking to get out on the farm and volunteer amongst the residents, this opportunity is for you! Routine chores are every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday starting at 10:00am and finishing up once chores are done--around 1pm. Volunteers for routine chores will need to attend an orientation and volunteer a minimum of once a month. Typical volunteer activities include:

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) provides support, education, and advocacy for people living with mental illness and their families. We offer several support groups, educational classes, and presentations for anyone in the community.

There are a number of volunteer opportunities available, including administrative support, event tabling, the NAMI Walk, being a presenter, and supporting the R Place Peer Recovery Center. If you are interested, please reach out to us!

Our fleet of delivery vehicles ensures that wholesome food gets delivered to recipient organizations. We rely on volunteers to clean out the delivery vehicles after each route and prepare them for driving the next day.

Description:

This position supports the Regional Volunteer Services Department. The Regional Volunteer Relations Team Member ensures the successful execution of the Volunteer Workforce Complaint Process in the region. The Regional Nurse Leader (RNL) is a front-line leader of the Nursing Network who partners with the local Regional Volunteer Services Officer (RVSO) to recruit health professional volunteers per regional needs. The RNL provides guidance on nursing and health matters and helps build the health professional network in the region. RNLs promote volunteer engagement and satisfaction across the business lines and work to achieve the Volunteer Services Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross National Nursing Network is comprised of all Red Cross nurses. Nursing Network leaders recruit and support nurses and other health professionals across all business lines to implement strategic goals of the American Red Cross as articulated in the Chief Nurse Initiatives. The American Red Cross is divided into geographic divisions, regions and chapters for service delivery. Each division has a Division Nurse Leader (DNL) appointed by the Chief Nurse and the Director of the Nursing Network. DNLs appoint Associate Division Nurse Leaders (ADNLs) to support RNLs and to assist them according to the division's unique needs.

Responsibilities

* Proactively support and guide Red Cross units in volunteer recruitment, reception, retention, and recognition to build health professional capacity across all business lines and at all levels of the organization in support of organizational and regional priorities. Assist units in volunteer recruitment to reflect community demographics.

* Act as a resource for nursing and health in the region across all business lines, working collaboratively with Nursing Network leaders and others to achieve the Chief Nurse Initiatives.
* Establish a good working relationship with key leaders at the regional level (e.g., Emergency Services Director, CEO, nurse/health leaders in other business lines).
* Establish relationships with community partners (nurses and non-nurses) and maintain updated roster
* Coordinate meetings for regional nurses and other health professionals, engaging colleagues and partners as appropriate in support of the Chief Nurse Initiatives.
* Regularly communicate nursing and health-related successes (e.g., awards, media coverage, projects) to other Nursing Network leaders and through other communication venues
* Ensure that nurse volunteers enter their nurse-specific information in Volunteer Connection and submit all volunteer hours
* Submit all RNL hours in Volunteer Connection on at least a monthly basis and maintain an updated Volunteer Connection profile
* Complete quarterly metrics and annual Nursing & Health Leaders Diversity Survey
* Recruit and support Nursing Network Engagement Specialists as needed.

RNLs should recruit for and mentor their own replacements in consultation with RVSOs and DNLs.

The American Red Cross provides 40% of the blood supply to the country. The Biomedical volunteers are a critical element to carrying out our mission, their experience and onboard is vital to volunteer growth.
The Onboarding Lead will manage a Biomedical Volunteer Workforce Engagement team who initiate a relationship with new volunteers to the department. Shelter Service Associate: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devasting to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. The role of this volunteer is to deliver food boxes to clients living in Iowa City and Hills, IA. Each day a new delivery route is created by staff and given to volunteers. Those who sign up to volunteer will drive alone. While the amount of deliveries can vary from day to day, volunteers are welcome to finish out their shift at Pepperwood Plaza if they finish deliveries early. A reliable vehicle, valid driver's license and proof of insurance is required.

America’s blood centers need donors #NowMoreThanEver. The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating our blood supply: blood drives have been canceled and donors are afraid to visit centers. The American Red Cross has recommended hospitals reduce blood product utilization by 25%. This is a deadly shortage that affects millions, including anemic, transplant, cancer, surgery, sickle cell, trauma, and pregnant patients. There is no alternative for blood.

In response, we have launched our COVID Code Red campaign to support blood centers and the healthcare system. The goal of this campaign is to start a social movement to bring greater awareness and rally young people nationwide to advocate for their local centers. UBI leadership would provide support to those volunteers or Code Red Responders. Responders have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the health of their community and give back during this hard time.

Through our guest services and administrative work opportunity you will provide a smiling face to welcome and interact with our guests: cancer patients that are undergoing treatment. Direct service advocates work directly with survivors of sexual abuse, typically as they're having a sexual assault forensic kit collected or reporting to the police. An advocate is potentially the first person to tell a survivor of sexual abuse, “I believe you” and the first person to affirm, "It's not your fault." In addition to responding to the immediate needs of survivors, advocates learn professional and practical interpersonal skills while gaining valuable experience beneficial within the fields of social work, law, medicine, and psychology, among others. Direct service advocates must complete 32 hours of training before they are able to volunteer.

The job of the Education Program Volunteer Presenter is to deliver community education programs developed by the Alzheimer’s Association, using scripted curricula, PowerPoint presentations and other prepared training materials provided by the Association. All topics are related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias as well as the information that affected individuals and families need. Presenters are expected to:

Training

A course is provided, which includes pre-work, orientation to the Association, observation of the program(s) presented, and the opportunity for structured practice with feedback. New presenters are observed and given constructive feedback. Based on the volunteers’ needs and the resources of the chapter, new presenters may also begin by co-presenting with a mentor. If a volunteer has not presented for an extended time, Chapter staff will assess if the volunteer should attend a refresher training to ensure curriculum familiarity.

Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia. Positively represent the Alzheimer's Association at Health and Wellness fairs and community events to distribute materials, educate the community about programs and services and recruit volunteers

Iowa Humane Alliance holds monthly volunteer orientations at the IHA Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic. Orientations alternate between the first Tuesday evening (6pm to 7pm) or the first Saturday afternoon (1pm to 2pm) of every month.

Youth soccer coaches are needed for the fall/spring outdoor seasons. (April/May or September/October)   Time commitment is about 2 hours per week during a 7-8 week season.  1 hour for games on Saturdays and 1 hour for a practice during the week.  Coaches choose their own practice days and time. Equipment is provided.  All games are played at the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park, 4400 Soccer Park Rd.

Volunteers must be able to pass a background check and complete a short USSF certification class. 

Past experience working with children is desirable along with a positive attitude and good mentoring skills.  Teaching good sportsmanship is a priority.  Past soccer experience is not necessary as training is provided.

Lend your talents to help organize the Alzheimer's Association signature event. The Walk Planning Team meets once a month and coordinates the efforts of team members identifying sponsorships, team recruitment/ retention, marketing logistics and more. 

The Alzheimer's Association is building an Event Team to work with Chapter staff to increase awareness of community fundraising events on or before The Longest Day of the year, June 21, 2019. Team members will assist with marketing The Longest Day to the community as they recruit and register participants from clubs, businesses and organizations to create various activities they like to do such as running, golfing, cooking etc. and turn it into a fundraiser to fight Alzheimer's.

Work hands on with cats, dogs, and other animals. Volunteers clean up after the animals and spend time socializing them. We are looking for safe and friendly people to rock babies or help our early child hood teachers in the classroom.  Do you like to sing songs, read books, help children with art projects or just simply rock a baby?  then LALC is your volunteer opportunity.  We will work around your schedule.  Come join our LALC family.

Become a volunteer driver with the American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program and provide rides as requested from cancer patients to and from their cancer treatments. Most rides take place during the hours of 7AM-6PM, Monday through Friday. The frequency of requests and times vary daily depending on how many patients need a ride at any given time. Every volunteer driver donates their time and gas - and can decide how often to provide rides, when, and how far! This is a very flexible and meaningful program - which can be lifesaving for cancer patients who have no other transportation options.

* Access to a safe and reliable vehicle
