The City of Iowa City Climate Action & Outreach Division, Johnson Clean Energy District, and Green Iowa AmeriCorps have organized a Neighborhood Energy Blitz, and the South District Neighborhood is hosting the inaugural event on Saturday, April 24, 2021. The Sign-Up Genius is full.
On the morning of April 24, volunteers will do 1300 doorstep-drops of Energy Saving Kits: LED light bulbs, furnace whistles, shower timers, and information about efficiency. That afternoon, volunteers will revisit those doorsteps to pick up batteries or old light bulbs that people wish to recycle.
Volunteer shifts run 9-11:30am and 3:30-5pm on Saturday, April 24. Volunteers will be walking delivery routes between 2 and 3.5 miles long. We would love to see lots of high schoolers’ involvement, but we would welcome volunteers of all ages! Folks concerned about climate change might particularly welcome this chance to take concrete action.
The Neighborhood Energy Blitz aims to shrink our community’s carbon footprint by improving the efficiency of buildings (in this case, households). It also intended to bring about a “just energy transition” so that the cost-saving benefits of energy efficiency can be enjoyed by all families, not just those who can afford solar panels or high-tech solutions.
